BBQ Baked Beans show’d up when I thought I couldn’t come up with anything new to do to baked beans. I threw myself a curve! These BBQ Baked Beans combine an amazing plethora of flavor layers. From fresh thyme to Creole mustard, and molasses to strong brewed coffee, this baked beans recipe is off the charts! Another great thing about this recipe is that it includes dried navy beans, so these really are homemade baked beans. Now, this is how to make bbq beans from baked beans.

How to Make BBQ Baked Beans

To make BBQ Baked Beans preheat oven, then use a cast iron Dutch oven if you have one, cook the bacon until crispy. Add onion/ caramelize. Add the garlic and thyme, and cook about 1 minute.

Next add all the rest of the ingredients. Stir to combine, bring to a boil, cover and place in the preheated oven. Bake for 2 hours undisturbed. Then stir the beans again and continue to cook until tender, approx. an hour.

Uncover and continue to bake until Liquid Smoke has thickened to a sauce-like consistency – about 1-1 ½ hours. Don’t let’ em get mushy! Then, add salt, pepper, or hot sauce to your liking!

The BBQ baked beans pioneer woman pens uses canned beans but I’m going with dried beans here.

Are These Similar to Southern Baked Beans?

Southern baked beans are a simplified version of BBQ Baked Beans and are basically how to make bbq beans from canned beans recipe. They’ve derive the same smoky flavor from Liquid Smoke, and then sweetened with molasses. The difference is that southern baked beans have Worcestershire sauce, and you’re not going to get a coffee buzz from them! If you just serve up BBQ baked beans canned, you’ll miss out on all the fun flavors.

How Do These Differ from Crockpot Baked Beans?

Our Crockpot Baked Beans are also thick, hearty, and delicious, and call for dried navy beans. They differ in that you use dry mustard instead of Creole mustard and Crockpot Baked Beans have ketchup.

Can You Make Baked Beans from Scratch Ahead of Time?

Absolutely! If you want the rich flavor that slow-cooking in the Dutch oven gives our Baked Beans from scratch, but don’t have time for that process the day you want to serve them, just follow the recipe, let them cool, and transfer to a (large) airtight container to put in the fridge.

How Do You Freeze Homemade Baked Beans?

The same method goes for freezing as refrigerating for any baked beans ahead of time. Just make sure the container is airtight, and you can leave homemade baked beans in the freezer for up to 3 months.

What Do You Serve with Baked Beans with Bacon?

Ooohhh! This is the fun part! If you’re already making such a down-home, Southern dish as Baked Beans with bacon recipe, you might as well do it up! For instance, serving with my Pioneer Woman Mac and Cheese would be an excellent pairing! Add our Stuffed Pork Chops, and there would too much Southern-ness to know what to do with!

    Hey That Girl,
Interestingly, this recipe does not call for soaking the beans ahead of time. I just made some fabulous beans from Rick Bayless last night and he doesn't presoaking either. I love it cuz it's one less thing I need to remember to do!!!
