Mickey's Backyard B-B-Q Review (2024)

Mickey's Backyard B-B-Q Review (1)

This looks like so much fun! I can’t wait to go check out Mickey’s Backyard B-B-Q. Suzanne did a great job ofcoming up with a way to enjoy the show forFREE. Even if you only have 10 minutes a day to devote to Swagbucks, over timeitadds up. You could use your earnings to do something special that you normally wouldn’t do just like Suzanne did.

After too many trips to Disney to count, we finally decided to check out Mickey’s Backyard BBQ at Fort

Wilderness Campgrounds. This is a 2 dining credit meal if on the dining plan or $36.00 – $59.00per person depending on the season. We went in August of 2015, and I paid $216.00 for 4 of us (3 Disney adults and one Disney child). Typically, I would never spend this much money on one meal, however, I was able to earn Swagbucks, which I cashed out for Target gift cards, and then bought Disney gift cards with the Target cards, so this meal only cost me SB sweat, and nothing out of pocket.

This dinner takes place on select nights in the Fort Wilderness Pavilion, which is in the Settlement area

of Fort Wilderness. This is a pay in advance meal. Since we were staying on Disney property, without a

car, we took a bus from our resort to the Magic Kingdom, and from there rode the Ft Wilderness Boat

launch from MK to the Fort. How magical to ride in the middle of the Seven Seas Lagoon. The boat

dock at Fort Wilderness lets you off with about a 3-5 minute walk to the Pavilion. Because of the

multiple methods of transportation needed, we left our resort at 4 PM for a 5:30 reservation. You can

also take a bus from Magic Kingdom (or any other park) to Fort Wilderness, but then you have a longer

walk and/or an internal Fort Wilderness bus to take you to the Settlement area. The boat ride there is part of the adventure, in my opinion. On the way you will even see some of the old abandoned River Country water park.

Upon arriving at the Pavilion (it took us less than an hour, as we waited only 2 minutes for a MK bus at

our resort) , we were queued up in a line. This is open seating, however, they seat you according to

how you are lined up, so the earlier you arrive the ‘better’ seats you have. They do not open the

pavilion for guests to be seated until 5:30, so if you are early, be prepared to wait in line. This is an open air pavilion, and the line is also outside, so be prepared for that as well. It was in the 90’s on an August afternoon while we waited, so it was very hot and humid. While waiting in line, there were photopass opportunities with Chip and Dale and Goofy, and there was a wait staff serving lemonade and water to the kids, and spiked lemonade to the adults.

Note: the bathrooms are air conditioned, so if you are desperate for relief from the heat, you can always head there.

Once they were ready to seat us, we were led into the Pavilion by the wait staff, and immediately the

bar and buffet was open. Yes, I said bar! The price of admission for legal adults includes, beer, wine

and spiked lemonade. Guests are seated at long picnic style tables and benches, with others, so be

prepared to be sitting next to strangers. There are ‘community’ condiments on the tables ( Ketchup,

mustard, salt, pepper, etc) as well as a roll of paper towels every few feet on the tables You could go to

the bar and buffet as many times as you like, throughout the evening. Buffet items include hot dogs,

BBQ ribs, BBQ chicken, garden salad, potato salads, cole slaw, sliced watermelon, corn bread, baked

beans, and many many desserts, including a freezer chest full of Mickey Premium bars. These are a

favorite in my family, so my kids were in unlimited Mickey Bar heaven!

Once everyone has arrived the band comes out and starts to play. There are 2 lead characters, a

cowboy, Tumbleweed Will, and cowgirl, as well as a lead female singer with the country western band,

who entertain with songs and dance. Cowboy Mickey and Minnie also arrive, with Cowboy Goofy and

BBQ Chefs Chip and Dale. These characters take turns on the dance floor where guests are allowed to

come up and dance, but be prepared for the Mom and Dad paparazzi. If you want a picture with these

characters, I recommend waiting in line to see them, when they are not dancing, as they have

designated areas outside of the Pavilion to greet guests with a photopass photographer. Throughout

the show, there are breaks in the music and dancing to watch a Cowboy perform lasso and whip tricks.

At this time, the children are invited to come and sit close on the dance floor to watch. There is also

some interaction where some of the kids are asked to come up and perform with the cowboy. We all enjoyed this experience, and glad we did it, but it is probably not something we’ll do again. Glad to have done it and even more glad that it was paid for entirely with Swagbucks!

(Thanks Suzanne)
